Since 2017, Home-A-Genius has built and refined a smart home system that runs on a server inside the property, so homes continue to operate during internet outages and independently of overseas cloud platforms
Singapore, Singapore – October 19, 2026 – Home-A-Genius, a Singapore-owned smart home integrator, has developed what it describes as Singapore’s first locally hosted smart home solution built entirely in-house. Developed and refined since 2017 and now installed in more than 900 homes, the system programs and stores all automation logic on a hub inside the home, in contrast to cloud-based systems that process commands on remote servers.
The approach addresses a growing concern among homeowners: what happens to a smart home when a cloud provider changes its software, pricing or availability. With a local server, lighting, climate, security and entertainment automations continue to run during internet disruptions, and the system does not depend on a third-party platform to operate.
Local server vs cloud: where the “brain” of the home lives
In a cloud-based smart home, a tap on the wall panel travels to a remote server, is processed there, and is sent back to the home before a light switches on. The provider owns that server, and with it the ability to change how the home behaves at any time.
A locally hosted system executes the same command inside the property. The automation logic, scenes and schedules are written, stored and run on hardware the homeowner owns.
“With cloud-based smart homes, the brains of the system live on the company’s servers, not in your home,” said Cheryl Chiang, Chief Operating Officer of Home-A-Genius. “Technologies evolve and companies change, but my home needs to remain reliable. That only happens when homeowners retain control through a locally run system.”

Built and programmed in Singapore, for Singapore homes
Home-A-Genius has developed and programmed its local-server solution in-house since 2017, rather than reselling an overseas platform. The company’s hub, switches and rule engine are designed by its Singapore team, with the hub carrying the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore’s Cybersecurity Labelling Scheme Level 1 label. Every system is configured around the realities of Singapore households: multi-generational families, domestic helpers, public holiday routines and compatibility with the smart TVs and appliances commonly sold here.
“Local-server architecture eliminates these risks. Overseas shutdowns or policy changes won’t affect our homeowners. Their systems stay secure and independent,” Chiang said.
Systems are configured around household routines. “If there’s a baby in the household, we may suggest a simple baby mode. Lights fade over 15 minutes, paired with white noise or a bedtime story through connected speakers. These aren’t gimmicks. They’re practical touches that fit naturally into daily life,” she added.
Security without a central point of failure
Keeping automation inside the home also reduces cybersecurity risk. “Hackers are more likely to target a central cloud server than an individual household. A breach in a centralised system can have a massive impact,” Chiang said. Because Home-A-Genius homes do not depend on a shared external server, they are not exposed to server migrations, API changes or mass breaches that can affect cloud ecosystems.
A long-term investment, not a gadget
Smart home systems are increasingly treated as part of a property’s infrastructure. While a local-server system may cost more upfront, Chiang argues it is the more cost-effective choice over the life of the home.
“Cloud-based systems carry risks like platform updates or business changes that could render smart homes unusable, forcing costly replacements,” she said. “Over the years, that stability, privacy and peace of mind far outweigh the small difference in upfront cost.”
Chiang also noted that locally controlled systems are no longer limited to large landed properties. “Today’s local-first systems are built to scale and can be surprisingly accessible and affordable,” Chiang said. Recent Home-A-Genius projects include landed homes at Aida Street and condominium residences at Jadescape.
Next step: Singapore’s first AI smart home
Building on nine years of local-server development, Home-A-Genius is also working on what it intends to be Singapore’s first AI smart home. The AI layer sits on top of the in-home hub and is designed to understand each household’s specific setup, rather than respond to fixed wake-word commands.
Planned capabilities include a 24/7 built-in AI helpdesk that guides homeowners through troubleshooting on the spot, natural-language control with time-based commands and command chaining, the ability to cancel an instruction mid-sentence, camera feed interpretation, voice-created scenes, and support for around 50 languages. Commands are priced per use with no subscription.
“Smart homes today still rely on the homeowner to learn the system. The next step is a system that understands the home and fixes itself, whether that is at 3am or on a public holiday,” Chiang said.
Showroom
Home-A-Genius operates a residential-scale showroom at T-Space, Tampines, where homeowners can see lighting, climate and device automations respond in real time without any dependence on external servers, and watch how scenarios are configured for their own household.
