John Riesen was born on May 29, 1990, and raised in in Ilion, NY. Describing his early childhood as “I grew up in a very loving household. My parents, my older sister and my little brother and I did not have much, but we were rich in spirit.
“My father was a preacher for the First part of my life, before returning to teaching, and my mother took great care of us at home. I wanted for nothing and developed into a high-level athlete (with a focus on baseball) by the time I was an early teenager. Baseball was my life for many years, teaching me discipline, diligence, and stamina both physically and emotionally and to this day I feel it is why I’ve succeeded as a professional singer.”
Prior to singing, John earned Academic All-State accolades in baseball in 2008 and All-Region honors in 2006 and 2007 (also in baseball) in the state of Michigan. During college, his sports
Career soon transitioned into singing, which has influenced his performance ever since.
In his lyrical projects John, displays a fresh perspective on life. “I’d like to be the leading name in the operatic and musical theatre industries singing at the biggest houses in the world. I would also love to branch out in the recording industry and do major collaborations and prove to the world that true opera singers are capable of doing it all, too,” stated John.
John’s fascination with financial success and art represents his love for promoting positivity. He believes in giving, through music. When asked about his favorite achievements he stated,” I have released two studio albums, What You’d Call a Dream (2019) and Christmas at Home (2020), as well as various songs, including “Autumn Leaves (2021),” “What a Wonderful World (2021),” and “Maria (from “West Side Story”) (2021),” which have received over 1
Million listens on Spotify and Apple Music. In addition, he has worked with Emmy-nominated PBS TV pianist Marina Arsenijevic in both video performance and studio recordings.”
John’s artistic talents have not gone unnoticed. He has appeared in various opera and theatrical productions around the United States, notably the role of Tony in West Side Story Suite with the NYC Ballet at Lincoln Center, as well as in Italy and China. This December, he will make
His Carnegie Hall debut with Musica Sacra as the tenor soloist in Handel’s Messiah, and he will make his Nashville Opera debut as Chris in GRAMMY award-winning song writer Marcus Hummon’s new musical Favorite Son.
Besides being a great performer, he also has a competitive spirit! His awards and honors include first place in the Harold Haugh Light Opera Competition, second place in the William C. Byrd Competition, Regional Finalist and Audience Choice Award in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Gulf Coast Region (2015), Great Lakes Region (2014 and 2013); second place in the Mary Jacobs Smith Singer of the Year Competition (2016), as well as the competition’s Dr. Melvin & Lea Johnson memorial award the previous year; fifth place in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Gulf Coast Region (2015).
If you aren’t convinced of his enchanting stage presence, John Riesen has been given the opportunity to perform for countless political figures, including. President Barack Obama, President Jimmy Carter, Judge Stephanie Kulp Seymour, and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. He has also performed the national anthem for a number of collegiate, semi- professional, and professional sports teams, including the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park, the Pensacola Ice Flyers, MSU hockey/baseball, and others.”
