12th September, 2019 – NEW YORK, NY – The National Resource Center on HIV and Aging, an initiative by GMHC, is pleased to announce the launch of their new website. The website is full of valuable resources to help older people with HIV and long term survivors. There are many myths still surrounding HIV and AIDS which hamper the proper understanding and acceptance of this condition.

Thanks to the breakthrough treatments, it is now possible to live a normal life post-diagnosis. There are more than 50% of individuals living with AIDS/HIV who are over the age of 50. The fact is that effective treatment will help these patients have a normal life span without any worries. The age expectancy will continue to climb as long as the long term survivors continue to follow a healthy lifestyle and make healthier choices in their lives. 

There have been numerous studies conducted over the recent past which show that older adults are developing high frequencies of illnesses associated with aging. Some of these illnesses are HIV, ailments related to heart and kidney, osteoporosis, cognitive declines, cancers, depression, and PTSD. At this age, managing multimorbidity is definitely a challenge especially for those who lack the support that they truly deserve like thousands of other US Citizens.

They are socially isolated due to the stigma and stereotyping that is associated with AIDS. These patients are at a higher risk for long term care which can turn out to be very expensive. This site is a true attempt to help all such elderly patients understand the condition. It offers critical information with regards to HIV and AIDS which will help them know their body better make healthier choices and age well.
