Free Up Space & Get More Phone Storage, Do This!

August 29 19:30 2019
Change the concept of your phone. Treat it like a backpack. A backpack with a finite amount of space. If it’s too late and you’re looking at ways to get more storage now, try these tips.

I came across a Forbes article titled, “Why Your Phone Storage is Always Full.” It was originally published in 2015 and sadly it’s not old news.  The article is more relevant than ever. Operating systems are currently topping out at 5 gigs, the average iphone app size is 38 megabytes, and for Androids 11.5 MB. Rather than just spending money on data services just be more aware of your habits and what apps you’re using. Do you really need to save funny GIFs on your phone?

Change the concept of your phone. Treat it like a backpack. A backpack with a finite amount of space. If it’s too late and you’re looking at ways to get more storage now, try these tips.

Get Rid of Excess Baggage

Everytime you get a new phone and load the contents from the previous phone you snowball the data. Do this over 3 or 4 phones and you’ve already taken up a chunk out of your storage. Don’t live in the past, clear out your life and get rid of the junk that’s been holding you back. Or opt for the brave blank slate and have a completely fresh start. “But, I may lose a number,”  if you need a phone number to track a friend down, are they even a “friend”?

Use Apps that Multitask, like TopBuzz

News apps were my thing: world news, local crime news near me, breaking news. I can look at all day long. I had a total of 7 installed – one app for local news, 4 for national news, and then some for entertainment news and sweet gossip. I realized that all my breaking news apps were breaking my hard drive space. A friend turned me on to a free news app that does it all, TopBuzz. I downloaded TopBuzz for the news, but also enjoyed the variety of funny videos and interest-based channels and articles from top publishers. If you have a bunch of one type of app, see if you find a replacement that does it all. There are some great new apps out there, don’t be shy.

One-Month Rule

If you haven’t used an app in a month, move on and delete it. Don’t worry you can always reinstall if you must. I recently cut Accuweather, Kindle, and games I already beat or stopped playing. Make your finger the ax and start freeing up some space.

Move on from SMS

Text messages take up a large amount of data. One thread alone can range from 1-5GB. Switch to third-party apps like What’sApp, FB Messenger, Google Hangouts, or ask your friends what they’re using.  Just keep your messages off your phone’s hard drive and in the cloud. Plus, when you get a new phone you just log in and your messages are still waiting for you. Deleting threads are always an option, but if some of the message must be saved download a program that can back them up, then clear them off.

Put Photos in the Cloud

Cameras have come a long way in the past 4 years. Images are more beautiful than ever thanks to better lenses and smarter algorithms, but the downside is that images and videos are taking up more hard drive space. If you are a shutterbug, download Google Photos, but most importantly get into the habit of backing up your photos to the cloud for free regularly, then delete the photos.

Don’t waste good money on a phone that will give you the same issues later down the road. Change your habits now and see what you can do with what you currently have.
