Every day, we’re living with the many benefits of traditional computing methods. However, there are many challenges that our current level of computer technology will not be able to overcome.

For example, there will be problems of size and complexity that we currently just don’t have the power computer-wise to address.

In order to solve some of these greater issues, we need to develop a new kind of computer science. This is where we will begin to harness the incredible power of quantum computing. But what exactly is quantum computing? Let’s take a look below at the short answer.

What is quantum computing?

Quantum computing is a type of computing that utilizes the mechanical phenomena of entanglement and superposition. This creates a state that builds, using a number of quantum bits or more commonly known as qubits.

This might lead us to wonder how quantum computing differs from regular computing. Let’s find out.

How does quantum computing differ from regular computing?

The regular science which has governed computer development and how we use it is based on binary digits. These are ones and zeros and are the components by which classical computers work.

Quantum bits or qubits are much smaller and can be in a state of either zero, one or both at the same time.

Computers built using a quantum system are able to perform extremely complex calculations but they require a huge amount of manufacturing precision to be accurate.

Our scientists and leading computer manufacturers are working constantly on improving computers using quantum science, but it may be many years before they are able to beat traditional computers.

Now we’ve seen exactly what quantum computing is, let’s take a closer look at how this computing sensation is able to help us in our everyday lives.

How can quantum computing help us?

According to a study by Nature today, physicists have successfully entangled 10 billion quantum bits which is just the beginning in the development of the technology known as quantum computing.

One of the most important parts of this research relates to silicon, which means that we may be able to use this cutting edge smart technology to incorporate quantum computing into the myriad of gadgets that are so important to us, such as our phones, tablets and desktop computers.

More importantly, it will help continue progress for the incredibly fast quantum computers of the future.

Now we’ve seen how important quantum computing will be in the future in terms of computing. Let’s look finally at how else this pioneering technology is set to help us in the future.

How else is quantum computing set to help with future growth?

This trailblazing technology is not only useful in the building of computer hardware and our everyday gadgets, but also in many other aspects of modern life such as:

  • Helping us to develop materials to build more efficient devices and structures
  • Financial strategies to create better financial retirement plans
  • Breakthroughs in science
  • Assist in the diagnosing of illnesses
  • Algorithms that can direct important emergency response resources such as ambulances
  • AI and machine learning

Businesses need to be ready for a quantum future because it’s coming.” – Jeremy O’Brien, as quoted in “Quantum computing is coming — are you prepared for it?
