Despite Increasing Anti-Immigrant Pressure from the U.S. Majority of Canadians Do not See Immigration as a Threat

August 19 13:08 2019

In an increasing interconnected and fluid world, where people choose to leave their home countries for a number of reasons, many developed countries such as the U.S. and the U.K., are taking a strong stance over anti-immigration. However, according to 2019 polls, young Canadians beg to differ.

Canada has been an example for the rest of the globe on how swiftly and compassionately they have dealt with refugees and asylum seekers, and much of the public opinion seems to be pro-immigration. A number of surveys (see sources below) have been conducted in the past two years to try and uncover the views around immigration.

Most participants said they believe immigration has a positive effect on Canada

Much like everywhere else, the opinions are polarized, however specific patterns can be observed. One Ipsos polling among established immigrants in Canada and the general public found that the majority of respondents perceive immigration as a positive with many benefits to the economy and the cultural of the country. Other key findings surfacing from this revealed that at the same time, 37% see immigration is a “threat” to white Canadians with participants without a high school diploma being more likely to believe this, as opposed to those with higher education.

Another research led by federal immigration officials found that the more time an individual or their family have lived in Canada, the more critical their views tend to be. On the other hand, about half of Canadians are in favour of immigration regardless if they are immigrants themselves or established.

Immigration still needs to be done right

Some of the more critical views and negative opinions are a result of illegal immigration. An immigration consultant explains, “Disparaged undocumented immigrants are an issue because they undermine the law and society. This being said, there is absolutely no reason, specifically in a country such as Canada to apply for resident status. As an immigration consultant, We are acutely aware of the many difficult circumstances people might find themselves in, adding in the confusion, fear and lack of information and support creates a whole new issue. At the same time, we know that no one would voluntarily leave their home unless different factors came into play. That is why we are 100% committed to making a difference to those who want to do it right but just don’t know how. All they have to do is reach out and we can find a solution with a free of charge evaluation”.
